  pH control

  Color removal
Color is often caused by dissolved organic matter, e.g. humic and fulvic acids (organic decomposition products from vegetation). It can also be a result of impurities of minerals such as iron and manganese.

The color level can often be a good indicator of the organic content of water. If color is caused by organic matter, there is often a relation between color intensity and the level of organic content. Reduced color, and hence reduction of the organic matter in the water, is therefore an important parameter to control to prevent damage to the industrial process.

  Sludge dewatering
The traditional way to get rid of the sludge from raw water treatment has been to just let the sludge drain back into the raw water source. However, it has become increasingly important to be able to handle sludge in a more effective manner due to new regulations, legislation and environmental issues.

Sludge treatment and disposal of sludge can be very costly. It is therefore of importance that sludge volumes are kept to a minimum. The bottom line is that high dry solids content reduces sludge disposal cost.

  Coagulation aid
Slow settling flocs can cause difficulties in coagulation processes. The flocs can be fragile and negatively affect hydraulic forces in basins and filters. In order to strengthen the flocs and make them easier to settle, it is a good idea to add coagulation aids.

Organic polymers are the most widely used products in water treatment. The synthetic polymer consists of organic high-molecular weight compounds with electrical charges (negative or positive). The polymers help to improve the coagulation process at low water temperatures, even if the process design is not optimized.

  Metals removal
Heavy metals are in most cases adsorbed by the suspended solids. By removing the suspended solids, it is also possible to reduce the heavy metal content drastically. It can also be dissolved in the raw water, and in such cases the treatment technique is based on adjusting the pH to such levels that the heavy metals form hydroxides and can be eliminated after the precipitation process (coagulation/flocculation).

Turbidity is the standard for expressing the amount of suspended solids. It is of certain interest to remove the suspended solids before the water is used in the production process.
